Auctions and food tasting at Marina Bay Sands for a good cause

You cannot seem to go wrong with food and shopping when it comes to engaging the Singapore public.

As Marina Bay Sands stage its second Sands for Singapore Festival in August in aid of charity, it has lined up activities and events that will allow you to sample cuisines from celebrity chefs and maybe own a pair of pink boots autographed by football star David Beckham or Spider-Man caps autographed by the movie's cast Emma Stone, Andrew Garfield and others who visited Singapore recently.

The festival will be held on the Friday and weekend of 1 to 3 August, and aims to raise money in excess of last year's collections of $3.6 million with its ticketed events, auctions for charity and gala dinners.

Among the organisations that will benefit from the donations are Association for Persons with Special Needs, Singapore Association for the Deaf and Art Outreach Singapore.

Celebrity chef dine-around
The food focus at this year's festival is a tour of the resort's celebrity chef restaurants. Capped at a maximum of 100 guests, the dine-around is a roving dinner where ticketholders will sample dishes in tasting portions at Cut by Wolfgang Puck, DB Bistro Moderne and Osteria and Pizzeria Mozza. The meal will end with a sampling of desserts and cheese at The Cheese and Chocolate Bar.

Price : $400 per person with a $3 booking fee
Tickets are available at the Marina Bay Sands Box Offices.

All proceeds will go to Singapore Association of the Deaf

The art of shopping
This event is both an online auction as well as an exhibit for display at The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands. International labels such as Anne Fontaine, Bally and Shanghai Tang as well as homegrown brands such as TWG and Kopitiam (Rasapura Masters) have donated items that have been embellished by Singapore artists associated with Art Outreach Singapore. These limited-edition pieces are up for auction, both online and at the respective stores in the Shoppes itself.

What to buy: A ruffled shirt from Anne Fontaine embroidered by a Singapore artist and a light installation created with coffee socks donated by Kopitiam (Rasapura Masters).

All proceeds will go to Art Outreach.

Celebrities give back to Singapore
Another auction not to be missed is one featuring personal items donated by celebrities who have visited Marina Bay Sands in the past year. These would include the aforementioned pink boots autographed by Beckham and Spider-Man memorabilia.

View them at the display gallery set up at the Shoppes, and bid online via

Proceeds from this auction will go to the Business Times Budding Artists Fund and The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund.

For a more affordable way to take part in the festival, join a 4km charity fun walk around the Marina Bay area organised by Community Chest ($10 per person) or enter the art installation called 'Tangle', made fully of coluorful elastic bands at the Marina Bay Ice Skating rink ($5).
