Avatar 2 feels like one of those movies we’ve been hearing about forever. 2009’s Avatar became the highest-grossing film of all time, grossing more than $2.78 billion worldwide and winning three Academy Awards. Writer-director James Cameron set about devising multiple sequels, repeatedly delaying production start dates until he got everything figured out. Filming has finally begun on Avatar 2, the first of four sequels that Cameron aims to shoot consecutively.
Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, C. C. H. Pounder, Stephen Lang, Joel David Moore, Matt Gerald and Sigourney Weaver are returning from the first film. Even though Lang’s, Gerald’s and Weaver’s characters all died in Avatar, this is a sci-fi movie, so Cameron must have a plausible explanation up his sleeve. Weaver has said she will be playing a different character, while Lang will be back as Miles Quaritch, who is set to serve as an antagonist across all four sequels.

Oscar-winning actress Kate Winslet is joining the cast as Ronal — it is not yet known if the character is human or Na’vi. Winslet starred in 1997’s Titanic, which Cameron directed and which was the highest-grossing movie before Avatar took the crown. “Kate and I have been looking for something to do together for 20 years, since our collaboration on Titanic, which was one of the most rewarding of my career,” Cameron said. “I can’t wait to see her bring the character of Ronal to life.”

The children of Jake and Neytiri will play a significant role in the sequels. Trinity Bliss, Jamie Flatters and Britain Dalton will play Jake and Neytiri’s three children. In addition, Bailey Bass, Filip Geljo and Duane Evans Jr. are playing young Na’vi members of the Metkayina Clan, a reef-dwelling tribe ruled by Tonowari (Cliff Curtis). Jack Champion is playing a human teenager who presumably befriends the Na’vi kids, named Javier “Spider” Socorro.
“We never had this youthful element before, and that brings a different kind of energy to the film,” executive producer Jon Landau said. “They represent the future generation of Pandora and play a very significant role—not just in this movie but throughout all the movies.”
The Avatar Sequels: Avatar 2 arrives in theatres in December 2020, followed by Avatar 3 in 2021, Avatar 4 in 2024, and Avatar 5 in 2025.
