Blow out the candles

Lo and behold, another week rolls by and it’s time to roll up our work sleeves and don those party hats because… the weekend has arrived. But honestly, it’s tough writing this column with mucho gusto after such an action-packed week. Between the shows, parties and friends in town for AFF/ Blueprint, the epic closing of The Shack, three concerts and trying to get a smidge of work done in between, I’m pooped. But clearly you’re not reading this to hear me whine… so let’s get on with it!

The saying goes, ‘laughter is the best medicine’ so if like me and you’re in need of a pick me up, come check out the VIP preview of The Best of The Edinburgh Fringe 2010 by The Comedy Pimp on Thursday May 6, 8pm at Stereolab. If you weren’t quick enough to get a ticket for this night, tickets for the full show are still available for Saturday at The Social House @ Clarke Quay (behind the Novotel Hotel). To buy your tickets or see clips of the award-winning acts, Dan Antopolski (UK) - Ava Vidal (UK) - Tiffany Stevenson (MC) go to www.thecomedypimp.com/

Its’ a May birthday bonanza with several club nights commemorating their inception and continued success. Blu Jaz Cafe at Bali Lane plays venue to two birthdays this weekend. On Friday May 7, GOOD TIMES mark the second anniversary of their monthly first Friday of the month party, by taking over all three levels of the cozy shophouse, instead of just the second floor. Encompassing everything from funk, hiphop and mashup to dubstep and D&B, the GOOD TIMES special guest for the evening is DJ Platurn, of the legendary Oakland Faders playing in Singapore for the very first time

On the next night, 44Beatz celebrate their first year birthday bash at Blue Jaz - Soundscapes. To turn up the music, residents Clark & Raeburn J have enlisted Reiki (Breakin Asia), Justin Jh (Coup) and host of Lush FM’s Clubscape, X'ho on deck duty. Have a slice of cake and show them you reciprocate.

On Friday May 7, the mega clubs keep it loud and banging. Zouk hosts the vodka-wielding, wild stage-man antics of Dim Mak head honcho, Steve Aoki and at Zirca, they unleash the new incarnation of music veterans Beni G (Mixologists) and Plus One (Scratch Perverts), performing together as the tight production outfit - Jack Beats. Pacha Ibiza resident, Dutchman Fedde Le Grand plays at Velvet Underground on the same night.

More birthday bonuses on Saturday May 8 when Attica Too throws Incognito, a party leading up to their sixth anniversary on May 22. For this theme night, the dress code is hats, shades or wigs and you gain free entry before 12am. Even more enticingly, all May Birthday Babies will receive a complimentary bottle of Moët & Chandon Brut champagne if they arrive before 11.30pm (Photo ID required). RSVP at [email protected] by May 6 to enjoy your complimentary bottle.  And for the May 22, go as your most outrageous alter ego to win the grand prize!

Home Club and Hooch launch a new weekly mid week party - Flash on Wednesday May 12 when Kelvin Seow, Roy Ng and Jonathan Chia give you major flashbacks by playing your favourite hits, plus the videos to go with it! For the launch, the couple that flashes the most rad retro outfit will win a pair of Mystic Vintage eyewear and a Nike jacket each. With bottles of Hooch for the first 100 hundred, Hooch one-for-one all night and Leftfoot vouchers for everyone, it's time to flashdance!

In next Thursday’s column, I’ll include an interview with the folks behind the highly anticipated beach/restaurant/ bar/ poolside resort, Tanjong Beach Club and how you can be invited to the opening.
