British actor Alan Rickman died aged 69 on Thursday,
The star played several memorable Hollywood villains in a career spanning three decades,
From Professor Snape in the Harry Potter films, to Hans Gruber in 'Die Hard', and the Sheriff of Nottingham in 'Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves'.
His repertoire also includes more tender roles in films such as 'Sense and Sensibility' and 'Love Actually'.
He was also a star of the stage in London and New York.
In a statement his family said he had died after a battle with cancer.
