Zachary Levi was announced as the star of DC’s Shazam!, playing the titular superhero (formerly known in the comics as Captain Marvel).
Fans know that two actors are required to play the character since the superhero’s civilian alter ego is that of a young boy named Billy Batson.
When Billy Batson shouts “Shazam!” (an acronym of Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles, and Mercury, from whom the superhero derives his powers), he transforms into Shazam.
The film has cast 15-year-old Asher Angel as the boy who will shout the magic word.
Angel has a regular role on the Disney Channel sitcom Andi Mack, playing the titular character’s love interest Jonah Beck opposite Peyton Elizabeth Lee.
Director David F. Sandberg (Lights Out, Annabelle: Creation) announced Angel’s casting on Instagram by posting a photo of Zachary Levi posing with a photo of Angel.
Left: Mark Strong Right: Dr. Sivana
Mark Strong is in talks to play Dr. Thaddeus Sivana, the mad scientist arch-nemesis of Shazam.
Strong previously portrayed DC supervillain Sinestro in Green Lantern, but since that film did not receive a sequel, Strong did not get a chance to play the character after he turns villainous.
Grace Fulton, who appeared in Annabelle: Creation, is reportedly in negotiations to play the lead female role, which has yet to be specified.
The screenplay is written by Darren Lemke (Goosebumps, Jack the Giant Slayer, Shrek Forever After) and Henry Gayden (Earth to Echo) and is gearing up to begin production in early 2018.
Sandberg announced the film will open in April 2019, following Aquaman, which is slated to bow in December 2018.
A film centred around Shazam’s opposite number Black Adam is also being developed, with Dwayne Johnson attached to play the supervillain and sometimes-antihero.
It is rumoured that the character will be introduced to the DCEU in Suicide Squad 2.
