Film Flush 2.0 - 'The Place Beyond The Pines' review | The Ip Men

'The Place Beyond The Pines' Movie Review

In this episode of Film Flush, Zaki & Dex talk about Ryan Gosling's new movie, 'The Place Beyond The Pines' as well as Ip Man movies.

'The Place Beyond the Pines' finds Gosling collaborating again with his Blue Valentine director Derek Cianfrance for a thrilling drama about fathers and sons.

Gosling plays Luke, a tattooed motorcycle stuntman for a travelling circus who finds out he has a baby with an old fling, Romina played by Eva Mendes.

One would think that Luke's descent into bank robbery -- a misguided attempt to provide for his family -- would be enough fodder for a whole movie, but 'The Place Beyond the Pines' takes a sharp turn with the entrance of Avery, a cop who has a run-in with Luke while on patrol.

Almost immediately, the film changes gears and becomes Avery's story until the final third when it picks up 15 years later. It's an unorthodox format, but the risk pays off.

'The Place Beyond The Pines' opens in theatres 4 April 2013

The Ip Men

Ever since the first Ip Man movie with Donnie Yen hit way back in 2008, we've been getting an endless stream of movies about Bruce Lee's master.

We had a sequel, a prequel, a Wong Kar Wai-ed fantasy story and now, one about Ip's later years. With seemingly every avenue of his life exhausted and put on screen already, one would think that there would be no more movies about Ip Man. Fortunately, we're here to offer some ideas.

'Ip Man: The Final Fight is still showing in theatres
