First Venom trailer slithers online

Compared to other films based on Marvel Comics characters that will be released in 2018, Venom has been flying somewhat under the radar. We’ve now gotten our first look at the film courtesy on a teaser trailer – emphasis on the ‘tease’.

Eddie Brock/Venom (Tom Hardy) is a journalist who becomes a monstrous creature when an alien symbiote from the planet Klyntar, which calls itself “Venom”, bonds to him.

The character was created by writer David Michelinie and Todd McFarlane – the Venom symbiote initially served as a ‘living costume’ for Spider-Man, and it bonded to Eddie when Spider-Man discarded it.

This trailer offers no glimpses of Eddie as Venom, with only a fleeting glimpse of the Symbiote itself. Michelle Williams shows up as Anne Weying, who in the comics, later takes on the identity of She-Venom. The film also stars Riz Ahmed and Reid Scott.

Venom first arrived on the big screen in 2007’s Spider-Man 3, portrayed by Topher Grace. This incarnation of the character was poorly received, and a standalone Venom film has been in development since 2007. Directors Gary Ross and Josh Trank and Deadpool screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick have been linked to the project across its development.

The film is directed by Reuben Fleischer (Zombieland, Gangster Squad). Venom is intended to kick-start “Sony’s Marvel Universe” - Silver & Black, a film featuring antiheroines Silver Sable and Black Cat, is set to follow Venom in this universe.

How closely Venom is linked to the current Marvel Cinematic Universe incarnation of Spider-Man, if at all, is not yet entirely clear. Marvel Studios is not involved with the making of Venom and does not regard it as taking place within the MCU. However, Sony considers it to be set in “the same world” as Spider-Man: Homecoming, with producer Amy Pascal claiming Venom is “adjunct” to that film.

Venom opens in October 2018.
