Free things to do this weekend

Everyone knows that the best things in life are free. We scour the calendar to bring you fun, free events.

It’s a night of music and dreams this weekend On the Waterfront. The Esplanade Outdoor Theatre presents to you Hillary Francis and Hang Up The Moon (Sean Lam of Concave Scream; 13 -15 Jul)) who will share with you their musical stories. Hailing from two different musical eras, Francis brings you a blast from the past while Lam keeps you in the present. Prepare to be mesmerised.

Bugs are great when they get rid of other pests, but not when they destroy the flowers that you took so long to grow. Come down to the Sengkang public library from 3- 4pm this Saturday (14 Jul) and you can learn to get rid of creepy crawlies without destroying the environment. Here, you will learn about common garden pests, their habits, and most importantly, how to manage them. There will also be a hands-on demonstration on organic pesticide-making using stuff from your kitchen. Now you never need to worry about garden-nasties anymore!

Singaporeans are known for their love of three things; queuing, eating and shopping. For Flea’s Sakeis holding one of their regular flea markets, Stolen, at Scape, and should you be needing to get a present for someone or just wanting to treat yourself, this is the place to be. There are all sorts of knick-knacks there from jewellery to used books. Previous events even featured a tarot card reader. So come on down. It’s probably the most legitimate form of lawful stealing.

If you’re hanging around the Fort Canning area, why not head up to Galeri Utama (The Foothills @ Fort Canning Park, 177 River Valley Rd) this Saturday (14 Jul). Olga Blitznetsova, a Russian artist has been living and painting in Singapore for the last seven years. Her paintings focus on nature in Singapore as well as some Singaporean landmarks. In this intimate gathering, she will share with you her inspirations, challenges and hopes.

Football fans can prolong their fever created by the Eurocup 2012, with the MOF Seven 2 Smoke Futsal tournament. Teams will be challenging against each other in hope that they can stack up the most number of wins over the course of play, or win 7 straight matches to qualify to the knock-out stages. Located at the Ark @ Thomson (596A Upper Thomson Road), you can pretend to be Castillas for a day and get some exercise at the same time.

Photography aficionados, this one is for you. Oakwood, together with Nikon and Lonely Planet Asia, invites everyone to its Most Memorable Travel” Photography Competition and a chance to win the grand prize of a trip for two with airfare and accommodations to an Oakwood property in Asia and a Nikon 1 J1 digital camera. You can submit your photos from 15th July to 15th September, and there is no prior costs. You must be 18 years old and above to join and pictures must be no larger than 3mb. Shortlisted photos will be placed on the microsite where viewers can vote. So what are you waiting for? Get snapping.
