Free things to do this weekend

We’ve always found the phrase “Nothing in life is free” a tad too cynical for our palates. That is why we have found some of the best free entertainment that you and your family can enjoy.

Be awed by the magnificent Technicolor multimedia show that is the Crane Dance @ Resorts World Sentosa. The love story of two mechanical cranes is told in a spectacular array of light and water effects. The sheer grace of how the huge mechanical crane moves is an absolute sight to behold.

Tap your feet along with the delightful Jazz numbers of Liquid at The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands. If you are a Jazz aficionado, be prepared to be delighted as they play some Jazz numbers that are rarely played in Singapore. Just nice if you have taken a hit at the casinos and looking to take you mind of things a bit.

This Thursday, head on down to Home Club for a screening of edgy award winning cartoons brought to you by Vicky Chen and MTV legend Patrick Smith. Billed as “Singapore’s first underground cartoon festival” the cartoon on show will definitely not be of the Spongebob variety. Almost all of the films will be shown for the first time in Singapore at the festival. Entrance is free so grab a bucket of popcorn and of prepare to travel to have a warped time.

Explore the flora and fauna of 19th Century Malaya through the eyes of the Colonialist at the NUS museum. Learn how the colonialism shaped not only the direction of social developments in Malaya but also how we come to understand the natural world. The dense subject matter might be off putting but a visit to the exhibition will be an insightful afternoon indeed.
