With fun-filled memories of Christmas and New Year holidays fading faster than this week’s sunshine, the Chinese New Year festivities come to our rescue.
And just like that, 15 days of excessive eating, visiting and mandarin orange-giving ensue. If you’re looking for a short escape from the inane questions of distant relatives and to shed the pounds from one pineapple tart too many, here are some options to get you out of the house and dancing.
My pick of the week has to be Syndicate: The F1rst Anniversary, happening on 5 Feb, Saturday, at Home Club. Responsible for the scene’s freshest sound in a while, they present a complete audio-visual experience with each installment, and their anniversary is not to be missed for anyone looking something that’s on the cutting edge of electronica. The heavy-hitting lineup features the entire Syndicate crew as well as guests MCs Masterpiece, TheCrazy88, Cosa Nostra and Gonzo.
I’m especially looking forward to Kiat’s live set with bad-ass songstress, Vanessa Fernandez and the AV set by LA-based guest Strangeloop, the live-cinema artist/musician and visual genius behind the Flying Lotus imprint, Brainfeeder. To quote music tastemaker, Mary Anne Hobbs, Strangeloop is “seriously involved in pioneering the next step in the evolution of performance, fusing sonics, narrative & visuals into an overwhelming hyper-sensory experience”. Can’t wait!
Dancing is great but doing good for others is even better. Hit Zouk on 3 Feb, Thursday, the first Day of Chinese New Year and do both! At Zouk Soundsystem, a night showcasing all the Zouk resident DJs, cover charges are waived and clubbers are encouraged to make donations at the door instead, all proceeds go to the Make-A-Wish Foundationâ, a charity that helps children with life-threatening diseases fulfill their wishes. Next door, Velvet Underground’s new Thursday night, Full Circle, keeps the golden era of hip hop, soul, funk and R&B alive.
On the same night, Singapore’s leading trance night, Progressions, celebrates its 8th Anniversary with local stalwarts of the scene - featuring DJs [email protected] and Yukun, as well as golden boy JonG and newly-spotted Lord Arif, at Stereolab. Having been on the local circuit for a long time, more so than many international DJs, you can be sure they know their stuff. So head down and support your local heroes.
On 4 Feb, Friday, make the most of Singapore Art Museum’s open house to usher in the Chinese New Year with free access to all SAM galleries. Fun, hands-on activities for the whole family start from 1pm and ongoing exhibitions include Trans-Cool TOKYO, Natee Utarit: After Painting and Collectors’ Stage: Asian Contemporary Art from Private Collections.
Kill the Noise
At night, Disco Vendetta returns with to Zirca its master of mischief, Inquisitive and his special guest, Kill The Noise from Los Angeles. You can look forward to Jake Stanczak, better known as Kill The Noise and label partner of DJ Craze at Slow Roast Records, working the decks to a barrage of hits and new productions.
An artist who has changed the face of pop, selling more than 100 million records worldwide in the process, hits our shores on Monday – yes, we’re talking about Janet Jackson! Bust out your ang pows if you haven’t already bought the tickets to her show as she promises to “get up close and personal” with fans and perform her greatest hits. You’ll be one of the first in the world to catch the tour as our sunny island is the first stop in her mega 35-city tour!
Have an abundant and prosperous New Year everyone!
