Playing Favourites: Interview With DJ Dave Angel

If you’re born to a family of musicians, it’s only natural that you will inherit the ear for groove. And Dave Angel Nicholas Gooden is one such lucky person. Entering the consciousness of the techno community with a banging remix of Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams” in 1990, Gooden or just Dave Angel has pretty much remained there ever since.

Although he’s London born and bred, the prolific techno stalwart been making records like he's from Detroit with a twist of funk and jazz slipping in and out of a continual tight roll of 4/4. This musical differentiator is what that's keeping the fans happy and punters dancing. “Techno evolved from jazz and forty years from now techno will be like jazz,” he says of the future of the music he built his career on.

The 45-year old deck will be dropping by the very swanky Ku De Ta for a gig this month and we got him to share with us some thoughts on his two decade long journey.

Hi Dave, how are you!? It’s been a while since we last saw you in Singapore. So what's been happening in the world of Dave Angel?

I have been unwell for some time, but I’m getting back to health and back on the road DJing. I've also released an album this month as well as EPs and some remixes.

Your style has evolved over the years from heart stopping techno to a groovier and funkier sound… how would you describe your sound now?

I would describe my sound as tech house with a bit of progressive house or just good party music.

What were you like as a kid and what drove you into being a DJ?  We read that your dad was a jazz musician and your uncle had a reggae sound system. Did they play a part in shaping your love for music?

Most definitely. They played a big part in my career. While other kids were playing outside, I was playing drums in their band and that introduced me into the world of music.

What’s particularly exciting you in dance music these days?

It has to be any well produced music with good production, and it doesn't matter what kind of music.

Where in the world is your most favourite place to play?

There are quite a few places that I love playing at and Singapore is definitely one of them.

What can we expect when we go and see Dave Angel?

I will play some classic house music with a twist that is sure to put a smile on your faces.

Looking back did you ever think you were ever going to be where you are now - a globe-trotting DJ and world class producer?

Absolutely not. I thought I would be bigger (laughs).
