SAF50 celebrations kick off on 12 Feb

With Singapore turning 50 this year, the three services that make up the Singapore Armed Forces – army, navy and airforce – will come together to host a series of commemorative events starting from 12 February 2015 right through to the National Day Parade on 9 August.
Minister of Defence Ng Eng Hen will be kickstart the SAF50 celebrations that day at VivoCity mall, with the theme, 'Our SAF: Giving Strength to Our Nation'.
There will be a four-day event, ‘Where SAF Stories Come Alive’, showcasing an exhibition where members of the public will be able to lay hands on simulators and admire military hardware on display, as well as learn more on those who have contributed towards the defence of our nation over the past 50 years.

At sunset daily over the four days, you may witness a ceremonial march by military personnel as flags on ships are lowered. Those who want to get a spot for a tour of a Landing Ship Tank and see the Super Puma helicopter onboard may ballot here.

The fourth day of the event, 15 February, will coincide with Total Defence Day.
Thereafter, there will be a roving SAF50 exhibition at the Singapore Discovery Centre (Feb) and the Marina Parade (March), Woodlands (April), Tampines (May), Jurong (June) and Central (August) Public Libraries.
Online users will not miss out, as there are plenty of videos made accessible on the SAF50 website and the Cyberpioneer Facebook page, featuring an online variety show that will see celebrity-led teams compete in Service-related challenges.
Other key events include the SAF Day Parade (1 July) and the Istana Open House (26 July). To involve more Singaporeans in the celebration, women and youth will be encouraged to don camouflage-patterned clothing on SAF Day.
