Spoofs to watch… or not.

When you’re talking about the best of the spoofs, you can’t go past the ones from, well, the past.

Classics like Monty Python, Carry On and the Naked Gun series all made audiences the world over fall off their chairs laughing. The dialogue was witty, the humour was sharp and nothing was off-limits.

So let’s take a look at the spoofs of yesteryear and the ones that you can look forward to real soon!

Top Secret! (1984)

Anyone remember Val Kilmer before he was Batman, and more importantly, before he got a little pudgier, and disappeared from our big screens? In his heyday, Val’s first starring role was this gem of a parody that had him acting as an American pop star (who really is a combination of Elvis, The Beach Boys and Little Richard) performing in Germany, who inevitably gets caught up in a resistance movement against the Nazis. Watch out for the infamous scene with Peter Crushing as a Swedish bookstore proprietor, which was filmed completely in reverse. Watch out for references to The Sound of Music, Goldfinger, The Blue Lagoon, Casablanca, The Great Escape, The Wizard of Oz and even Jaws

Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery (1997)

Oh, behave! When Austin Powers first came out in the late 90’s, it set off a whole slew of catch phrases and slogans that made it an almost instant cult classic. Parodying heavily on the James Bond films as well as the 60s spy films, Mike Myers played Austin Powers as a bumbling but charming (and oversexed) spy from 70s. Austin’s nemesis Dr Evil (also Mike Myers), is from the 70s as well, and who perpetually wants to take over the world. Unfortunately, both of them have a little trouble trying to adjust to the world in modern times. Austin Powers produced another two sequels - Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me (1999) and Austin Powers in Goldmember (2002).

Scary Movie (2000)

No one is safe… from the horror spoofs that have come from the Wayans brothers. Every horror film, slasher and mystery movies were thrown into the mix of Scary Movie, along with parodies of I K now What You Did Last Summer, The Sixth Sense, The Usual Suspects, The Matrix and The Blair Witch Project. Of course, there’s also a dose of Scream in there. Scary Movie spawned another three sequels, because there was just so much out there to spoof! Watch out for bigger stars like Pamela Anderson, Charlie Sheen, Denise Richards and Jenny McCarthy in the later sequels. There’s even talk of a Scary Movie 5 soon.

Vampires Suck (2010)

It’s impossible to ignore the Twilight series that have hit the screens (and will continue to in the next few years), so it’s not surprising that a spoof was quickly made. The problem is, most feel it was probably done in too much of a rush and reviews have been pretty bad.

Stan Helsing (2011)

The obvious parody is on Van Helsing (2004) which originally starred Hugh Jackman as a monster-hunter. This spoof, however, has nothing to do with monsters and saving the world. Instead, it’s about Stan Helsing, who works in a video rental store, and who could be related to the legendary Abraham Van Helsing. He’s been tasked with delivering a bag of videos across town on Halloween but somehow, he and his friends keep getting into trouble. Oh, my.
