Star Wars: Episode VIII is "The Last Jedi"

The official title for the next installment in the Star Wars series is now known. In a post by Lucasfilms, the film's title has been revealed to be Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Written and directed by Rian Johnson and produced by Kathleen Kennedy and Ram Bergman, the film continues from The Force Awakens where Rey (played by Daisy Ridley) hands Luke Skywalker (played by Mark Hamill) his old lightsaber.

While no plot has been mentioned, it could refer to Luke Skywalker as the last Jedi. In an event last July 2016 where Mark Hamill was interviewing Ray Davies of the Kinks, Hamill himself told the crowd that "I finish Episode VIII, and then I’m out of work". He later clarified in a tweet that he meant he was "out of work" because Episode VIII was wrapping up soon. Theories about the plot for the next installment has made #TheLastJedi hashtag the top trending item on Twitter.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is scheduled for release December 15, 2017.
