TGIF!: Your weekend guide (1-3 August 2014)

Music & nightlife

With less than a week to go until National Day, get in the patriotic spirit with Tiger beer tonight. Go all out and get your hair dyed in red and white by professionals from Toni & Guy over at TBB Tiong Bahru Bar. Score passes to the event over at Tiger beer’s Facebook page.

Beloved Scottish alt-rockers Travis return to Singapore for a concert by The Gathering at The Star Performing Arts Centre tonight. They’ve played to the Singapore crowd a few times over the year, but lead singer Fran Healy always comes armed with stories and new songs.

If you’re up for partying, young gun Mat Zo hits up Zouk tonight, or Singapore Island Culture Club is popping off at Club Kyo with Aldrin on the decks.

Bandwagon’s The Music Market returns this Saturday, 2 August over both floors of Hard Rock Cafe. There will be a stellar line up of Singapore’s very own with the folk sounds of The Sam Willows, the smooth soul vocals of Gareth Fernandez, and indie mayhem with Cashew Chemists, among others. There will also be pop-up stores selling vinyls and t-shirts, food and drinks to keep you fuelled throughout the festivities from 4pm to midnight. Entry is $15 online or $17 at the door. Get more information here.

Kids & family

BMW World 2014, the largest automotive showcase in Asia has landed in Singapore this weekend, from 1 to 3 August at Marina Bay Sands. From concept cars to new models (such as the BMW X4 Sports Activity Coupe and BMW Motorrad bikes) and even the MINI Clubman concept (which will be seen in Singapore for the first time), it’s a car enthusiast’s dream exhibition.

Other highlights include the BMW bicycle show, where stunts will be performed with the BMW cruise bike. There are even activities for the kids, with a colouring contest and a baby racer race (open to babies/toddlers between 18 months and three years old).

This Sunday, 3August, be part of a Singapore Book of Records attempt involving M&M’s over at Plaza Singapura. From 6 to 7.30pm, witness as the flag of Singapore is constructed entirely out of the chocolate candy (including the rare white M&Ms) at the Atrium.

Arts, culture & entertainment

Let’s get ready to rumble! MMA league Rebel FC’s Battle Royale commences tonight with the quarterfinal knockouts. Pitting eight fighters against each other, the highlight match is between American Miguel Torres and Japanese Takahiro Ashida.

From tonight until 28 October, catch master magician Joe Labero for A Night Of Magic At Raffles. You might recognise him from ‘Incanto’ at Resorts World Sentosa, and he brings the same awe-inspiring, death-defying illusions to the Jubilee Hall stage.

For film buffs and movie lovers alike, the 22nd Israel Film Festival is running at Cathay Cineplexes until 5 August. You can still catch movies like ‘Big Bad Wolves’ and ‘Hunting Elephants’ this Saturday, which stars Sir Patrick Stewart.
