TGIF!: Your weekend guide (22-24 August 2014)

Arts & culture

Arguably the biggest draw this Friday and Saturday (and next), is the Singapore Night Festival that’s happening in the heritage district (Bras Basah and Bugis). From light installations by students from SUTD at the National Design Centre, all the way down to the block party at The Substation, we’ve already done all the work for you and picked out 10 things to check out at the Night Festival. Festivities start from 7pm and carry on till past midnight.

Frankenstein is reimagined at Creatory this weekend

San Diego has Comic Con and Singapore has Creatory – a hipster convention of massive proportions. Set in a disused multi-level warehouse in Tai Seng, there’ll be everything from mini terrarium workshops, hand screen printing to pop-up DJs, bars and restaurants at ‘Tasty Plaza’. For more information and tickets, click here.

One of things worth checking out at Creatory is a Frankestein-centric exhibition by Kult. ‘The Frankenstein Freak Show’ will showcase portraits inspired by Mary Shelley’s classic character by 24 artists from around the world. There will even be a “Frankendoll” at the exhibition, where one of the art pieces will be brought to life.

Kids & family

Like Willy Wonka and the chocolate factory brought to life, ‘Fantasia by Escriba’ opens in Singapore from 22 to 24 August. The world’s first live confectionery theatrical production even houses the world’s tallest waterfall. There’s even a five-tier wedding cake, chocolate ‘Jamon’ ham and a chocolate recreation of the famous Las Ramblas street in Barcelona. Here’s a 15-second preview of some highlights.

Music & nightlife

It’s also going to be a music-filled weekend.

Indie darling Pleasantry release their second album ‘Synapses’ at the Esplanade recital studio tonight. The band will also be accompanied by more than a few musician friends on stage, judging from this instavideo.

Meanwhile, rock and roll goddesses Deap Vally take on Singapore at Beep Studios at the Spring Singapore building as part of Dr. Martens #Standforsomething live music series. We spoke to the ladies about their penchant for crochet, alongside their ability to produce face-melting riff on stage.

DJ, producer, model & actress Jessie Andrews spins at newly-opened Canvas tonight. The DJ, who is signed to Ultra Records, is more recognisable as one of the faces of American Apparel, but she’s also responsible for some pretty slick remixes.

This weekend it'll be a rare chance to see hip hop legend Mos Def live and in person at a pool side party at the Hard Rock Hotel. Now he might go by the name Yassin Bey, but he’s still the hip hop force of nature he’s always been.
