Rating: 1 star out of 5

The Stars: Eric Tsang, Wong Cho Lam, Louis Yuen, Johnson Lee

The Story: A trio of friends try to help Blue earn enough money to marry his girlfriend by taking part in a wrestling match against a group of American professional wrestlers.

The buzz: A HK comedy featuring a popular comedy trio.

Insing says: A movie meant to show off the comedy talents of a popular comedy trio Wang, Yuen and Lee, feels like a pointless series of skits. It shows some promise initially as it takes stabs at Hong Kong foibles. However, after the first half-hour the show degenerates and even giggles are hard to come by, with the movie ending up in a sentimental and preachy ending.

With constant references to Hong Kong pop culture and movies such as Ip Man and Infernal Affairs, those not familiar with them might find the movie’s attempts at humours fly over one’s heads, and even then, it’s far more misses than hits.

The best comedy moments arise from showing HK, such as the high price of property and columbarium salesman who hang around hospitals. Still, the comedy trio are fairly tame compared to other comic combos from HK’s film industry, particularly since the roles of the key trio are interchangeable.

Veteran Eric Tsang does little to help the movie along, and the whole film seems to have been rushed out of an assembly line to cash in on the trio’s popularity.

Fortune Buddies opens in theatres Aug 11.
