What the Flick: 'Fifty Shades' teases and tickles

You’ve watch the trailers and read the books, so these lines may be familiar to you: “Mr Grey will see you now…”

“…So young – and attractive, very attractive. He’s tall, dressed in a fine gray suit, white shirt, and black tie with unruly dark copper-coloured hair and intense, bright gray eyes that regard me shrewdly. It takes a moment for me to find my voice."

Not since ‘Lady Chatterley’s Lover’ (1981), Jean-Jacques Annaud’s ‘The Lover’ (1992), or even ‘Twilight’ saga, has a book and its upcoming movie adaptation made so many people weak-kneed to the point of collapse.

Okay I kid, but to see grown-ups sneaking a peek among the pages in bookstores, or nonchalantly reading the book on the train with cheeky smiles on their faces is hilarious.

To call ‘Fifty Shades Of Grey’ an erotic romance novel is an understatement.

Even though its prose cannot pass muster, it is still a 100-million-copy sordid juggernaut that has set loins on fire, a piece of fiction that transformed electronic readers and tablets into sex toys in disguise.

And yes, the much-awaited adaptation in glorious celluloid has to open on Valentine’s Day.

So what can we expect from the movie come 14 February (12 Feb in Singapore)?

Beyond the “unusual behaviour” and “graphic nudity” that the American censors have warned us about, and the “tampon scene” that producers have yanked out of the show, nothing more is known about the movie other than that it is a story of two people, Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan) and Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson), finding each other and having repetitious sex.

For now, there is a soundtrack, thanks to Republic Records, that might give us an inkling as to what to expect. So let’s take a deep dive into some of the songs that are already out there.

Annie Lennox - 'I Put a Spell on You'

How else to begin the movie than with a song that screams lust and desire?

Her vocal chops have been harnessed for movies such as ‘American Beauty’, ‘Dracula’ and, of course ‘Striptease’, and Annie Lennox is here again to make the soundtrack sexy.

Just imagine Ana and Christian locking eyes when this comes on. You know, when the lift door closes at their initial meeting and Ana says, "Christian", and Christian replies, "Ana".

Laura Welsh - 'Undiscovered'

This possibly refers to Ana’s “undiscovered” leanings towards sexual perversions. Cue Christian opening the doors of his sex dungeon and convincing her to “explore her limits”. Oooooooh.

The Weeknd - 'Earned It'

Look no further than this video to see what Ana will get up to in the movie. Directed by Sam-Taylor Johnson, the steamy video is 4.35 minutes of sexual tension with Ana all tied up, Japanese bondage-style, while scantily-clad dancers cavort nearby.

This possibly alludes to Christian encouraging Ana during her sexual exploits.

Ellie Goulding - 'Love Me Like You Do'

"Every inch of your skin is a holy grail I've got to find," sings Ellie Goulding for her new song 'Love Me Like You Do'.

The 27-year-old singer's latest video for her power ballad just exudes sensuality: a man and woman (Goulding) dancing, the woman swept off her feet. At least that's what the filmmakers want us to believe.

Beyonce - 'Haunted'

'Haunted' may be Beyonce's critique of the music industry failure to take risks, but in 'Fifty Shades', it just screams sexual liberation as the diva purrs about slapping and biting.

The Rolling Stones - 'Beast of Burden'

People get tied up in this movie. Enough said.

Beyonce - 'Crazy in Love (2014 Remix)'

The pop diva’s stripped-down and gritty version of her famous hit can just about belong anywhere in the movie. It is about a woman so crazy in love with a person that she is willing to say and do crazy things, like Ana saying this: “You beguile me, Christian. Completely overwhelm me. I feel like Icarus flying too close to the sun.”

Who says things like that?

Frank Sinatra - 'Witchcraft'

It is yet to be released in the theatres, but this movie is already a box-office success. Variety reported that demand for pre-sale tickets to the movie’s first week opening on US online movie ticket retailer Fandango is so high, cinema owners have offered new showtimes.

Now THAT is witchcraft.

‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ opens 12 February 2015 in Singapore. The soundtrack album is available in stores and digitally on the same day.
