ZoukOut turns 10!

WIN a pair of Zoukout passes! Find out how.

It’s hard to believe ZoukOut is already 10.

Wait, I take that back. Having worked on the event since its 2000 inception up till being a guest for the very first time last year, I’ve seen ZoukOut grow from a fledgling dance music festival, to the mammoth, award-winning attraction for tens of thousands that it is today.

In the past when ZoukOut approached I would get nauseatingly anxious, and deliriously exhausted as we worked extra long hours on the pre-planning. But now anxiety makes way for sheer anticipation as the 10th Anniversary will undoubtedly take the cake and the cabana as it hits Siloso beach on Saturday Dec 11 for another 12 hour session. (Advance tickets are completely sold out for the first time since 2000, Event Day tickets at $88 are available at the venue from 6pm only)

For the uninitiated, unless you hate crowds, loud music and scantily clad people having a good time, ZoukOut is a blast, even if you’re not into music.  But like life, you need to be smart to make the most of your night. For starters, get a room on Sentosa or arrive early to beat the crowds and earmark the best spots and timeslots to get your groove on. Sponsors usually hand out freebies in the early hours, so suss out which brands to cosy up to.

Full-on live acts are noticeably missing this year but the majority will be more than pleased with the double headliners, David Guetta and Tiesto, who alone could probably draw 20,000 fans. Pacing yourself is key though, as history serves, headliners don’t come on before 3am. This is good news for people like me who prefer the warm up acts anyway, the ones making the cut for me are Lindstrom (whoooopppeeeee!!!), Seth Troxler and Booka Shade.

Others might have hopes pinned on the Midnight Juggernauts and their live show including arresting visuals, as well as Laidback Luke, whose Singapore following grows with each visit and hit remix. Dennis ‘ Hey Hey’ Ferrer and Zouk residents Jeremy Boon, djB and JNR keep the house heads satisfied, while non-electronica enthusiasts can always find solace at the Mambo Jambo/ Hip Hop Stage where non stop radio hits from past to present are mixed at rapid speed, amid a sea of synchronized hand gestures. Aldrin’s 7am closing set at the Main Stage, now the stuff of legend, is the final ploy to keep you dancing till the bitter end.

Getting home is when things get tricky. It is common to see party-goers, usually tourists, waving $50 in the air to attract errant taxi-drivers. So either designate your driver now, or work on your stamina to stay till daybreak and catch the public transport home. To help you last, take breathers between dancing and check out the art installations curated by the Singapore Art Museum along the beach, or get a back massage, or just lie on the sand- it’s a beach party!

Final tip: don’t forget your sunglasses. Sunrise can be harsh when you’ve been up all night and there’s no sense scaring civilians on your way home.

Zoukout is on Sat, Dec 11, at Siloso Beach Sentosa. On-site ticket sales are available at $88 each. ZoukOut is hosted by Zouk, the winner of the Best Nightspot Experience, at the Singapore Experience Awards.
